Iwo Jima is a fairly small Volcanic Island at about 8 squre miles. it is approximatley 800 miles south of Tokoyo, which made it an extremeley valubable military asset in terms of the United State's ability to strike mainland Japan, in the event of an invaision.
In the lower left corner of the above map is Mt. Suribachi. This was the loacation of the iconic "Flag Raising."

Above is an aerial relief map of Iwo Jima; this photo demonstrates the small width of the south of the island. The fighting was espcially brutal in this battle due in part to its unique geography.
